Vitamin A is a (water-insoluble) vitamin for birds that do not (or insufficiently) produce vitamin A themselves, such as parakeets, parrots, cockatoos and canaries (white recessive). In nature, curved bills often eat vitamin A rich foods. Seeds for crooked beaks usually contain too little vitamin A, which means that addition to the diet is necessary. Recessive white canaries cannot convert vitamin A from provitamin A, so adding it to the diet is necessary.Signs that indicate vitamin A deficiency:-Canaries (especially recessive white canaries):- poor breeding results.- Parakeets, parrots and cockatoos:- stuffy nose and swollen upper eyelids often accompanied by lacrimation, in severe cases adhesion of the eyelids- swellings between and behind the lower jaw branches (indicating swollen salivary glands)- damage to the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat and respiratory tract.
